INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with writer MICHELLE TEA and two of the 21 filmmakers HILARY GOLDBERG and ALEXA INKELES on their exciting upcoming film project VALENCIA: THE MOVIE/S, based on Michelle’s book Valencia, a memoir of her 25th year in the wilder, boozier, and cheaper Mission of the late 90s. Each of the book’s 21 chapters are being shot as a five minute short film by a different director and featuring different actors in an unconventional way. The films will tour together as a feature for a year, after which point the rights to each film will revert back to each director.

MICHELLE TEA is the author of four memoirs, including the award-winning Valencia, which is currently being made into a film with 21 filmmakers. She has also published a collection of poetry, a novel, and has a young adult fantasy book coming out on McSweeneys next year. She is founder and executive director of RADAR Productions, which runs the monthly RADAR Reading Series at the San Francisco Public Library, the Sister Spit performance tours and the annual RADAR Lab Writers Retreat. This year she will begin publishing Sister Spit Books, an imprint of City Lights. She is a producer of Valencia: The Movie/s.

HILARY GOLDBERG is a filmmaker and artist. Her films and music videos—including recLAmation, in the Spotlight, Beyond Lovely, Transliminal Criminal, and Katastrophe’s Big Deal—have been screened in venues ranging from the American Cinematheque in Hollywood to the Women Make Waves Festival in Taiwan. She directed Chapter 5 in the Valencia feature collaboration and is acting as a producer and post-production supervisor on the project as well as animating the titles that are being illustrated by Ariel Dunitz-Johnson.

ALEXA INKELES is a director, screenwriter, and video editor. Her original documentary and narrative film work has screened worldwide in festivals, as extras in DVDs, and most recently via Wired Magazine’s Ipad app. Both her documentary and narrative work explore the themes of coming of age, sexuality, sex, relationships, and technology in popular culture. She also co-directs and shoots an award-winning project called the Crash Pad Series that features authentic queer sex and sexuality. Just for fun, she recently played a small acting role aside Heather Graham in Stephen Elliot’s new feature film Cherry about a young woman becoming an erotic BDSM model. Her latest short is adapted from Chapter 10 of Michelle Tea’s book Valencia and is a 90’s era drama of love lost and found at a Thanksgiving dinner party with “mean girls.” Her favorite movie is Heathers.

VALENCIA: THE MOVIE/S is a collaboration between 21 filmmakers and Michelle Tea, to transform her cult classic, queer coming-of-age novel, Valencia, into a visual story, with a filmmaker each taking one chapter of the book and shooting their interpretation with their own cast—no input from Michelle—what results is a crazy-quilt, down-the-rabbit hole into a mythological 90s San Francisco dyke scene morphed into a urban wilderness populated by lezzies and trans men, drag queens and genderqueers, moms and animated buffalo. With 21 different ‘Michelle’s, Valencia: The Movie/s takes the solo ‘I’ of memoir and explodes it into a multitude of individuals with varying identities and takes on the universal experience of finding your place in the world.

Filmmakers: Chapter 1 Courtney Trouble; Chapter 2 Amos Mac; Chapter 3 Aubree Bernier-Clarke; Chapter 4 Lares Feliciano; Chapter 5 Hilary Goldberg; Chapter 6 Channing Kennedy; Chapter 7 Sara St. Martin + Michelle Lawler; Chapter 8 Dia Felix; Chapter 9 Silas Howard; Chapter 10 Alexa Shae; Chapter 11 Sarah Adams; Chapter 12 Jerry Lee Manhattan; Chapter 13 Peter Pizzi; Chapter 14 Sharon Barnes; Chapter 15 Cary Cronenwett; Chapter 16 Cheryl Dunye; Chapter 17 Bug Davidson; Chapter 18 Samuel Topiary; Chapter 19 Olivia Parriot; Chapter 20 Chris Vargas + Greg Youmans; Chapter 21 Jill Soloway
