KUSF In Exile 06.10.12 8-10 AM Whiskey Before Breakfast DJ Richard White

A two hour set of Folk, Acoustic, Flat Picking, Traditional, Bluegrass, Contemporary, and everything else related with waking up in a relaxed way to get the Sunday started off. Originally a radio show that was on WKSU, with Kerry Blech in the 70's, which led to the Folk Alley that we hear now.

For this particular WBB, I decided to go to a passion that has been
recently kindled. That passion is vintage radio. From time to time,
there will be classic radio episodes as well as vintage radio
commercials and bloopers to warm the cockles of your heart as well as
the usual folk/blues/psyche. Here are the four radio plays I presented
this morning:

David Harding, Counterspy "Germans In Mexico" (NBC's Blue Network;
June 22, 1942)

Jeff Regan, Investigator "Lady With The Golden Hair" (CBS; July 31, 1948)
(This episode not only featured Jack Webb, who played the title role,
it also featured Barton Yarbrough, who co-starred with Webb on Dragnet
from 1949 until his death late in 1951. This series only lasted
throughout the second half of 1948 and was briefly resurrected in 1950
with a different cast.)

Dragnet "Homicide: Nickel-Plated Gun" (NBC; June 10, 1949)
(This is the second production and is the earliest surviving episode
in this series. The famous nine-note intro which kicked off both the
radio and TV episodes appears on the next production, "Werewolf".
Along with Webb and Yarbrough, Raymond Burr co-stars as their boss.
Also of note is the more detailed use of sound effects. Most radio
shows required one or two sound technicians. Dragnet used no fewer
than five.)

The Black Museum "A Silencer" (Mutual Network; ?, ?,1952)
(Featuring Orson Welles)

RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6,  1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a freshman at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.

I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!

INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with artists LEAH ROSENBERG and FRANCESCA PASTINE on their current exhibitions, and HEATHER HOLT VILLYARD Executive Director of the organization ArtSpan and Truesilver Gallery.

LEAH ROSENBERG was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, now living and working in San Francisco. Rosenberg received her MFA in 2008 from the California College of the Arts and her BFA in Visual Arts from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003. She is painter, sculptor, and cake-maker whose bodies of work combine systems of accumulation and elements of layering to explore how our experiences, emotions, and memories build up over time. Her paintings, paint-based sculptures and cakes have been exhibited and served throughout the US and Canada. She is currently employed as the head pastry chef at the Blue Bottle Coffee rooftop garden café at SFMOMA, creating desserts based on artworks of rotating museum exhibitions. When she is not mixing color into cake batter, she might be found punching confetti out of sheets of dried paint. FRESH PAINT new work by leah rosenberg with an essay written by Maria Porges is currently on view at Truesilver Gallery through July 10, 2012.

Leah’s work embeds within the time of its making. This time, encoded as moments, days, and weeks, are made visible in the accretion of layers of paint, like geological strata visible only when the landscape is cut-away. Her process combines systems of accrual and layering techniques. The addition of each layer also requires the selection of color, a decision both personal and informed by everyday experience, mixing the internal and intimate with the world of received images and external encounters. The layers come to signify a pile-up of experiences and memories; some are lost, but many fragments remain.

FRANCESCA PASTINE is a visual artist and teacher living in San Francisco. Her work re-contextualizes and subverts printed icons of cultural production as a way to conflate political conditions with her lived experience. She considers her repurposed Artforum magazines as unsolicited collaborations with the artist featured on their cover. The re-configured magazines map out a tangle of associations, unique contradictions, and paradoxes that combine to embue the inanimate object with emotional power. Born in New York, NY, she received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She was the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Grant in 2009 and a KALA Fellowship in 2011. Her work has been shown at galleries, art spaces, and collections nationally and internationally. She is represented by Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco with a current exhibition titled UNSOLICITED on view through July 7, 2012.

In her Artforum Excavation Series which began in 2008, Francesca recontextualizes content and subverts it in order to insert herself into the larger global narratives, manipulations map out a tangle of associations, unique contradictions, and paradoxes through curious juxtapositions. Pastine’s interaction with Artforum magazines is a meditation on materiality which results in a palpable complexity between form and information.

HEATHER HOLT VILLYARD, Executive Director joined ARTSPAN in April 2010. Using her ten years of experience in arts management, she oversees all aspects of the organization’s operations. Before coming to ArtSpan, she worked at SFMOMA managing the SECA membership auxiliary and special museum events. Heather currently serves as the Chair of the SECA 50th Anniversary on the SECA Council at SFMOMA and was formerly the Chair of the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery Advisory Board. She runs a contemporary art gallery with her husband Charles out of their home in Noe Valley called TRUESILVER GALLERY SF. Heather studied as a fine artist at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.

The mission of ARTSPAN, nonprofit organization, builds community by connecting the public to visual arts in San Francisco. Through SF Open Studios, youth and adult education, and art-centric events, ArtSpan creates a platform for artists to thrive, fostering a Bay Area that values the arts.

TRUESILVER GALLERY property was originally purchased in 1971 by Imogen “Tex” Gieling and set up as a metal-smithing cooperative under the name Truesilver Union. Today the space functions as an exhibition and project space for artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, performance and new media. Truesilver Gallery’s mission is to provide new opportunities and audiences for emerging artists while engaging the residents of Noe Valley in contemporary art.

KUSF In Exile 06.09.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.
