A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration. This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

Born in 1977, ALEXANDRE JOLY lives and works in Geneva where he studied industrial design and fine art. Investigating sound, Joly’s installations and performances have a recurring theme of the exploration of possible interactions between material and sound, setting up bewildering orchestrations for uncommon ways of hearing. INTERVIEW
Join DJ Margaret in conversation with SFAI’s Walter and McBean Galleries Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs MARY ELLYN JOHNSON, and LUC MEIER from swissnex San Francisco, whose role is Interdisciplinary Programs. swissnex is an organization that connects the dots between Switzerland and North America in science, education, art, and innovation. We will have a conversation about the current exhibition, Think Art – Act Science, When art and science meet curated by Irène Hediger in collaboration with international curator Hou Hanru and Mary Ellyn Johnson, on view through November 12, 2011.
Mary Ellyn Johnson is the assistant curator of the Exhibitions and Public Programs department at the San Francisco Art Institute. Through exhibitions, lectures, symposia, films and interdisciplinary events, SFAI provides direct access to major practitioners and theorists of contemporary global culture, and connects students to the larger community of art and ideas.
swissnex San Francisco Mission: To connect the dots between Switzerland and North America in science, education, art, and innovation. swissnex San Francisco is an initiative of Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education and Research, managed in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affiairs as an annex of the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco. A public-private venture, they are part of a network of outposts in Bangalore, Boston, Shanghai, and Singapore. Along with individual science and technology counselors around the world, they work on behalf of Switzerland to expand education, research, and innovation.
LUC MEIER manages Interdisciplinary Programs at swissnex San Francisco, with a focus on art-science and art-technology interfaces.
Transforming the Walter and McBean Galleries into a working lab, Think Art – Act Science, When art and science meet is composed of eight artists: Monika Codourey, Christian Gonzenbach, Alexandre Joly, Roman Keller, Pe Lang, Wenfeng Liao, Alina Mnatsakanian, and Nicole Ottiger, who took part in the Swiss artists-in-labs program (Zurich University of the Arts/ZHdK), completing an immersive nine-month residency in a scientific research institute or a university science department. During these residencies, the artists were exposed to discourses within the scientific community and gained deep insights into the methodologies and processes of scientific research in areas ranging from biology and biodiversity to cognitive neuroscience and psychology to nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, and physics. The resulting exhibition is arranged around three main themes addressed by the artistic investigations: ecology and environment, spatial awareness and emotions, and explorations of new technologies.
Think Art – Act Science, When art and science meet, is a cooperation between the Swiss artists-in-labs program at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), Swissnex San Francisco, and the San Francisco Art Institute.

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.
A delicious mixture of Motown meets early Jamaican reggae,Old School Punk & Powerpop meets 60's & 70's garage rock, with just the right amount of my live radio broadcasts from '79-'81 from various San Francisco clubs to round out the program.

After doing various radio Specials the past year I was asked by KUSF in Exile in San Francisco to host a weekly program every Friday night at 7PM Pacific time. The first show aired on OCT 28 and featured UK Psychedelic Rock & Acid Folk 1968-1970. The programs focus will be highly eclectic with music played ranging the spectrum of sound and styles. I began Eurock as an FM radio program in California in 1971. Now after 40 years I have come full circle to begin again a new musical adventure. Tune in, Listen & Enjoy every Friday night!
