If anyone personifies the word 'maven' it's DJ Carolyn. Her impeccable taste in punk, garage and rock has influenced Bay Area listeners for over two decades. A listener passionately sent in, 'she has always been the only DJ that matters. She finds music nobody else does, and it rocks!' Her dedication to the local scene goes beyond spinning the latest indie disc or old-school classic, to outright mentorship of fledgling talent. Catch her weekly show... and you'll find out why, when it comes to Bay Area rock, you've been served." -From SF Bay Guardian who awarded Carolyn as 2006's and 2008's Best DJ: Terrestrial Radio

RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6, 1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a freshman at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.
I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!
A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration. This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

Erkin Koray (born June 24, 1941, in Kadikoy, Istanbul), has been in the Turkish rock music scene since the late 1950s or early 1960s. He is widely acclaimed as being the first person to ever play rock and roll in Turkey; in 1957, he and his band gained fame by playing covers of Elvis Presley and Fats Domino. He was also one of the first Turkish musicians to embrace the electric guitar and modern amplification.

Aquarius Records & Sublime Frequencies are pleased to present legendary Turkish musician ERKIN KORAY in person at AQ records, SF.
In his first and only promotional event within America to date, Mr Koray will be visiting Aquarius HQ to meet fans, and sign copies of his r...ecent Sublime Frequencies release Meçhul – Singles & Rarities.
This is a rare and unique opportunity to meet the true godfather of Turkish rock and psychedelia - an iconic guitar hero and songwriting genius with a voice of gold, who has carved out his legend across the last five decades.
Erkin Koray was responsible for founding his country's first rock and roll group in 1957. Forging western sounds with his own inimitable musical mastery, he self-produced singles and LPs throughout the 1960s and 1970s that shook and altered Turkish society. Erkin didn't stop at rock and roll. Over time, he began to find inspiration in folk sounds from Turkey's Anatolian interior, and radio broadcasts received from Egypt and Lebanon. He looked to the east from his west-leaning Istanbul perch, and began incorporating these sounds into his own work. This amalgamation was as unprecedented and unorthodox in Istanbul at the time as rock and roll itself had been in the 1950s. The resulting hybrid sound ignited what became known as the Arabesque music movement in Turkey – which continues to this day.
While Erkin has recorded and performed tirelessly throughout the years, both as a solo artist, and with the powerful groups he formed, his extensive back catalogue only began to be explored by the international community in the 1990s.
He is now recognized as one of the foremost global leaders of psychedelic, folk rock, pop and balladry. His music has stood the test of time more than many of his western contemporaries and influences have managed to, and his prolific work ethic has not ceased. He continues to live and breathe music, performing epic concerts, and continuously plotting new recordings and strategies. His vision and integrity, coupled with his pronounced world views and inherent musical greatness, have made him the unique and magnificent living legend he is today.
After years of bootlegged reissues on the market, Koray has been engaged in a decade-long battle to win back the rights to his own music both within Turkey and internationally.
In 2011, Sublime Frequencies worked together with Mr. Koray to present Meçhul – Singles & Rarities (SF067), compiled by Mark Gergis and culled from the personal archives of Erkin Koray. It stands as the first collection of its kind, authorized and approved by the artist himself.
The album features tracks that have been previously unheard and/or unavailable in the west. Ranging from the sublime to the surreal, these tracks offer an essential glimpse into the extensive repertoire of the great Erkin Koray.

Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with two active long-time members of Bay Area art, writing, and music communities, writer and KALX Berkeley 90.7fm “Dj Matokie” HEIDI DE VRIES who spends much of her extracurricular time participating in art and culture in the Bay Area and beyond. Heidi is an active cultural blogger at Engineer’s Daughter. Plus SUZANNE STEIN, poet and publisher of the Oakland-based press TAXT. Suzanne currently works as community producer at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, editing the museum’s blog, Open Space, and organizing a variety of talk- and conversation-based programs.
HEIDI DE VRIES lives in the Bay Area and freelances as a writer and a music consultant. She is also a volunteer DJ at KALX Berkeley, and though her show is currently on hiatus she would be happy to recommend some awesome tunes for you anytime. You can find Heidi at her blog, Engineer’s Daughter...to quote her “I’m just your average art-and-culture-lovin’ world-travelin’ Latin-quotin’ vegetarian DJ sort of girl.”
SUZANNE STEIN is the author of Tout va bien (Displaced) and HOLE IN SPACE (OMG!). Poems, talk performances, and prose have appeared in War and Peace, On: Contemporary Practice, Counterpath Online; and at New Langton Arts, the San Francisco Exploratorium, The Poetry Project, and elsewhere. She is editor and publisher of the small, Oakland-based poetry press TAXT and was codirector and film curator at four walls gallery in San Francisco. She works currently as community producer at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, organizing a variety of talk- and conversation-based programs, and is editor-in-chief of the museum’s blog, Open Space.
