The Soft Pink Truth was an experimental house music side-project from Drew Daniel, one-half of experimental electronica duo Matmos. Do You Party?, the first album was released in 2003, and featured, among other original songs, a cover of Vanity 6’s Make up. In 2004, Daniel followed up with The Soft Pink Truth’s second album, entitled Do You Want New Wave (Or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?) (irreverently abbreviated to DYWNWODYWTSPT), a reference to a song by Minutemen. The album consisted entirely of house covers of classic hardcore and punk songs including “Do They Owe Us A Living?” by Crass.

INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with film scholar and videomaker Greg Youmans with his new book on the landmark LGBT documentary Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives, and film and video artist Chris Vargas, who together collaborate, produce, and star in the web sitcom Falling In Love...with Chris and Greg.

Greg Youmans is a scholar of queer activist and experimental filmmaking, with a particular interest in the 1970s. He received his PhD from the History of Consciousness program at UC Santa Cruz and currently teaches in the Film and Digital Media department there. Arsenal Pulp Press has just published his book about the paradigm-shifting gay and lesbian documentary, Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives, which was made in 1977 by the Mariposa Film Group based here in the Bay Area. Greg is now at work on a larger book project about gay and lesbian filmmaking in the 1970s. He is also a film and video maker. In collaboration with Chris Vargas, he makes the ongoing video series Falling in Love…with Chris and Greg.”

Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives by (author) Greg Youmans examines the historical, political, and aesthetic significance of this important film, situating it firmly in its late-1970s context. He also delves beneath the film’s surface to explore the backstory of its making, from the complicated relationships among its six filmmakers (three men, three women) to the more than 140 video pre-interviews they conducted in their search for the perfect cast. The book is arranged into alphabetical chapters, each exploring a key theme, issue, or person connected to Word Is Out: “A is for Anita,” “B is for Burden of Representation,” “C is for Collective,” “D is for Documentary,” etc.

Chris Vargas is a film and video maker whose areas of interest include queer/transgender history, tabloid biography, and radical politics. In 2011, he earned his MFA in Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley. His solo video work includes Have You Ever Seen a Transsexual Before? (2010) and Libéraceon (2011). With Eric Stanley he is the co-director of the movie Homotopia (2006), as well as its forthcoming feature-length sequel, Criminal Queers (2012) and with Greg Youmans he is the co-creator of the web sitcom Falling In Love... with Chris and Greg.

Falling in Love…with Chris and Greg began in 2007, a situation comedy about a gay odd couple, one liberal, one radical; one transgendered, one not. They don’t have a whole lot in common, but somehow they manage.

KUSF In Exile 02.18.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.
