Spotlight: '80s Japanese Idol Music with Verne Innhel and Loren (Rampage Radio)
4/17/11 KUSF In Exile

Idol music or “J-Pop” as most people call it nowadays, has a very definite sound, which, while rooted in western pop music, is uniquely Japanese. Lyrics are mostly in Japanese with a few English words sprinkled around, usually in the chorus. Subject matter is relatively tame – ranging from kataomoi (unrequited love) to blueberry jam – songs suitable for teenage girls to sing for their intended audience - teenage boys. The overall sound is, in a word, cute. Starting in the 70s with acts like Minami Saori and Pink Lady, the idol phenomenon reached a peak in the mid to late 80s with acts like Nakamori Akina, Wink and the 50 member-strong Onyanko Club.
