This show goes out to my home away from home, Portland, Oregon. I was
up there this last week as my Whiskey Before Breakfast show for April
22 as well as my 360 Sound Show for April 25 were being broadcast.
Consequently, I was not there for KUSF's 35th Birthday. In this
episode of The 360 Sound Show, you will hear excerpts of four new
albums from PDX artists as well as music from quite a few comps over
the last few years. The only exception to the rule here is that to
kick of this show, I include several tracks from a Boise, Idaho band,
Finn Riggins' brand new EP. I saw this band at Holocene up in PDX
during this latest stay. Enjoy!

Finn Riggins, with tracks from Benchwarmers, on Tender Loving Empire:

"Benchwarmers"
"Plural"
"Big News"

Y La Bamba, with tracks from Court The Storm, also on TLE:

"Moral Panic"
"Como Ratones"
"Viuda Encabronada"
"Ponce Pilato"
"Court The Storm"

Portland Cello Project, with tracks from Homage, from Jealous Butcher:

"She Will"
"Canon On A Lillipopalicious Theme"
"All Of The Lights"
"H*A*M*"
"Lua Descolorida"

From Friends And Friends Of Friends, Vol. 3 (2010):

Boy Eats Drum Machine "Lolo Forest"
Brainstorm "Split The Lark"
And And And "You Can't Hide"
Typhoon "White Liars"

From Friends And Friends Of Friends, Vol. 4 (2011):

Mnemonic Sounds "Keeping It Quiet"
Light For Fire "(NY) By The Hand"
Alamedas "Silver Hands"
The Ascetic Junkies "Thought Thief"

Much of the next two sets was taken from the A Compilation Of Portland
Music series, a four-volume set which was released from 2004 to 2007.
The number given is the volume number from which each song was taken.

The Bella Fayes "Far From The Disco" (1)
Invisible "Verdict Swings" (1)
The Sun The Sea "Even Happier" (4)
Here Comes A Big Black Cloud! "Southern Suite" (4)

KUSF In Exile 05.06.12 2-8 AM Rampage Radio DJ The Prophet Of Doom

RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6,  1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a freshman at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.

I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!

KUSF In Exile 05.05.12 8-11 PM Fermata DJ Stevil

A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration.
This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with the fantastic artist/musicians, and Exile Djs CLIFF HENGST (Caught Up With, the Chair) and SCOTT HEWICKER (Mein 20th Century) about their current exhibition Sin Titulo at Mulherin + Pollard NYC and their long-time Bay Area histories.

CLIFF HENGST is an artist, performer and musician based in San Francisco. He has shown at Mariella Arts, Milan; Test-Site, Austin, TX; and LACE, Los Angeles. Gallery 16, 2nd floor projects, Ratio 3, Right Window, the infamous KIKI Gallery, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, all in San Francisco, among other spaces. He is a member of the band Troll and frequently plays with Aero Mic’d. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1992.

SCOTT HEWICKER is an artist, writer, and musician based in San Francisco. He has shown at Galleri Christina Wilson, Copenhagen; Deitch Projects NY, University Art Museum, Berkeley, CA; New Image Arts, LA; Gallery 16, 2nd floor projects, Right Window, Jack Hanley Gallery, New Langton Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, also the infamous KIKI Gallery all in SF. He co-curated the exhibition, Hauntology at the Berkeley Art Museum with Lawrence Rinder in 2010. He is a member of the band The Alps, Troll and frequently plays with Aero Mic’d. He received his MFA from Stanford University in 2005. You can also find Scott at Aquarius Records, read his reviews of current releases.

Both artists have previously collaborated on exhibitions, and for the book, Good Times, Bad Trips published by Gallery 16 Editions in 2007. They are represented by 2nd floor projects and Mulherin + Pollard.

In their exhibition Sin Titulo, artists Scott Hewicker and Clifford Hengst explore the nether worlds between sublime mystery and lurid banality. In drawing, painting, videos and performance, both artists mine sparsely populated interiors and haunted objects that reflect on the anticipatory charge of discreet physical contact through experience, memory, and fantasy. Hengst’s watercolor and ink paintings on paper are based on dim light and shadows, and places people hide themselves both physically and emotionally. He investigates the darkness and mundane allure of anonymous settings and the strange and silent waiting game of boredom and promise. Hewicker’s acrylic on canvas paintings take on a wide breadth of subject and styles from muted objects and abstracted figurations, to blurry landscapes and soft focus interiors. His new paintings concentrate on the empty low-resolution environments of bedrooms, bathrooms and various other public and outdoor spaces emphasizing a compulsive ambiguity between public and private. Hengst and Hewicker collaborated on a performance during the opening.

KUSF In Exile 05.05.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.
