INTERVIEW
Join DJ Margaret in conversation with artist RANDY COLOSKY and MUSEUM OF CRAFT AND FOLK ART’s NICOLE CRESCENZI, Development Associate about their current exhibition, FIAT LUX: Randy Colosky New Works curated by Natasha Boas and Jennifer McCabe, on view through March 10, 2012.

Artist RANDY COLOSKY is a graduate in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute and trained in building construction, Randy Colosky is a materials-driven conceptual artist who works with exacting physicality -using commonplace and industrial materials- altering the standard functions of traditional craftsman processes with a strong emphasis on the architectonic. Colosky’s work delves deeply into the character of materials and dissects their codes, activating them with new ideas and associations. He explores abstract theories from physics, philosophy and spirituality and marries them with utilitarian and cast-off materials. Many of the works revolve around structures of repetition, tension, containment, and the unorthodox possibilities of sculptural transformation. Colosky’s work has been shown throughout the Bay-Area and beyond at such venues as Southern Exposure, Kavi Kupta Gallery in Chicago and Hosfelt gallery. His 2010 “Secret Handshake” show at Ampersand International Arts garnered him wide exposure in the artworld and the press. Colosky’s first solo museum show, currently at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art “FIAT LUX,” features all new commissions and is generously supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.

JENNIFER MCCABE, has served as Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Craft and Folk Art for four years, leading the organization through challenging financial times while establishing innovative programming. She has curated such successful exhibitions as ‘The Shape of Things: Paper Traditions and Transformations’; ‘Inside/Outside: Artist Environments’; and ‘Volver: Mexican Folk Art into Play’. Previously Jennifer was Assistant Director of New Langton Arts, San Francisco. She received her MA in Art History from San Francisco State University. Most recently she has served as Chair of the Northern California chapter of ArtTable and adjunct instructor at Mills College, where she taught Contemporary Art and Critical Thinking in the MFA program.

NATASHA BOAS, PhD, Curator at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, since Fall 2009. Boas is an independent curator, writer and professor who has been working in the contemporary international art world for over a twenty years. She has been a curator at such institutions as The American Center and the Centre Pompidou in Paris and was the public programs Curator at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and Executive Director of the new Sonoma Museum. She earned a doctoral degree from Yale University and has lectured widely on contemporary art, theory and curatorial practice. Dr. Boas was the founding faculty for California College of Art’s masters in Curatorial Practice program and has contributed to numerous publications including ArtNews, French Vogue, Domino, The Believer, Juxtapoz, and Dwell Magazine.

Originally from the East Coast, artist NICOLE CRESCENZI received her first Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Georgia. Disenchanted with the systemic greed of medical insurance companies, however, she turned from the path of medicine and travelled internationally for two and half years. Returning to the United States, she chose to pursue her passion for the arts, both in the mechanical and material, as well as in the critical and conceptual. After earning a second Bachelor’s Degree in Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute, she continued and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from SFAI as well. Nicole’s practice is focused on the analog and process, investigating the critical role of image making, of mediation, and of the fantasy of representation, itself.

KUSF In Exile 11.19.11 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.
