Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with curators GLEN HELFAND and CYDNEY M. PAYTON on their current exhibition Temporary Structures opened at SFAI’s Walter and McBean Galleries, and continues through December 15, 2012.

TEMPORARY STRUCTURES explores the exciting possibilities of impermanence. Featuring over a dozen acclaimed international and Bay Area artists, the exhibition includes works—many of them site-specific—concerned with architectural aspirations, follies, and momentary acts of cultural transformation. The projects address aesthetic, political, and social ideals, ranging from the rise of consumer culture to 19th-century French uprisings to the recent Occupy movement, and help bring new meaning and understanding to the past and present. Participating artists include: Pawel Althamer, Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt, David Gissen, Amy M. Ho, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Roy McMakin, Christian Nagler & Azin Seraj, Ben Peterson, Michael Robinson, Jonathan Runcio, Mungo Thomson, and Together We Can Defeat Capitalism, plus a climbing performance as part of Paul Kos’s installation. Temporary Structures includes a rich series of performances, artist talks, and film screenings, all FREE and open to the public.

GLEN HELFAND is an independent writer, critic, curator, and educator. His writing appears regularly in Artforum and at Artforum.com, and he’s contributed to the Huffington Post, San Francisco Bay Guardian, SFWeekly, ArtInfo.com, Salon.com, among many other periodicals and exhibition catalogs. He was the associate editor of the design magazine CMYK and a co-founder of the Bay Area arts website Stretcher.org. He’s a Senior Adjunct professor at California College of the Arts, where he teaches courses on contemporary art (including classes focusing on suburban aesthetics, commerce in art, and professional practice). He also teaches in the graduate and undergraduate art programs at Mills College, and at the San Francisco Art Institute where he organizes the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series. Helfand has curated exhibitions for the de Young Museum, San Francisco; the  San Jose Museum of Art; the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena; Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco; Dust Gallery, Las Vegas; and the Mills College Art Museum, Oakland. He lives in San Francisco.

PAYTON, former CEO and Chief Curator for MCA DENVER, has curated and organized numerous international, national, and regional exhibitions including Because 64 Crayons Made in the USA: Yu Cheng Chou; Star Power: Museum as Body Electric featuring David Altmejd, Carlos Amorales, Candice Breitz, Rangi Kipa, Wangechi Mutu, Chris Ofili, and Collier Schorr; Related: Anthony Giocolea; Recent Paintings: Suzanne Kuhn; FADE/Denver: Erwin Redl; The Peace Project: Robert Behar & Rosario Marquardt; See Into Liquid featuring Chiho Aoshima, Whitney Bedford, Tony Capellan, Vija Celmins, Ellen Gallagher, Roni Horn, Robert Longo, Richard Misrach, Jacco Oliver, Catherine Opie and Massimo Vitali; Blood: Lines & Connections featuring Adel Abdessemed, Sama Alshaibi & Joe Farbrook, Art for Humanity, Heman Chong, David D’Agostino, Boryana Dragoeva, Zhang Huan, Lea and Pekka Kantonene, Oleg Mavromati, Zhu Ming, Sabah Naim, Marcos Ramirez, Tarja Pitkanen-Walter and Victor Sydorenko; Chimera: Lynda Benglis; Sumer: Larry Bell; and The Nature of Things featuring Ellen Driscoll, Fischli & Weiss, David Humphrey, Sandy Skoglund, Alan Saret, and Alan Scarritt. RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6,  1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a sophmore at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.

I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!

KUSF In Exile 09.15.12 8-11 PM Fermata DJ Fari

A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration.
This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

KUSF In Exile 09.15.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.

KUSF In Exile 09.14.12 8-9 AM Double Mocha DJ Junglebook

iPhone and iPad Player

My show is called Double Mocha, because it goes from slow and sleepy at 8 a.m. to moving and jittery by 9, every Saturday morning. It's strong and stimulating, but still sweet. It's extremely freeform, though it's mostly 20th Century music, from the 20s to the 90s. Also featured are artists and songs associated with San Francisco and California, drawing not only on official recordings, but also from my own deep stash of demo tapes, rehearsal and live recordings, plus all kinds of other sounds, voices, noises and audio environments from the past 100 years. With your host, DJ Junglebook.

p.s. - You can even follow me on Pinterest! http://pinterest.com/halfbeat/ And if that's just not enough Junglebook, I also program a tiny online TV station called www.HalfBeat.com , with three channels spinning out tons of entertainment without your having to lift a finger.
