KUSF 09.23.08 RADIO CAROLYN Guest King Kahn

King Khan and the Shrines, sometimes referred to as King Khan and (His) Sensational Shrines or The Supreme Genius of King Khan and His Sensational Shrines are a Berlin-based garage rock and psychedelic soul band.
Founded in 1999 by the twenty-two year old King Khan, formerly of Canadian garage rock outfits The Spaceshits (where he operated under the pseudonym Blacksnake) and Kukamongas. The band is noted for its impressive stage antics. Typically King Khan is scantily clad, and the overwhelming frontman. His performances feature a cheerleader, and a mixture of instrumentation including, but not limited to: keyboard, baritone saxophone, guitar, bass, and drums. He played an energetic concert at the 2008 Pitchfork Music Festival.
Khan also currently plays with fellow former Spaceshit member, Mark Sultan, in the King Khan & BBQ Show, a doo-wop and punk inspired two-man band.

KUSF 10.14.07 2- 4 PM Spotlight Harry Partch DJ Nikolai

Harry Partch: Corporeality
Harry Partch, creator of his own music theory, compositions, instruments and recordings, was born in Oakland in 1901. After briefly attending music school in the 1920’s, he abandoned Western musical tradition and its tuning system of equal temperament (i.e., 12 piano keys per octave).
Instead, heavily relying on ancient Greek practice and acoustic theory, Harry Partch developed a system of just intonation, dividing the octave into many more intervals than just the usual 12.
To realize his unique tuning system, Harry (“a musician seduced into carpentry”) found it necessary to adapt, invent and build his own instruments, such as the Kithara, Boo, Quadrangularis Reversum, and Zymo-Xyl. As only one set of these beautiful, hand-crafted instruments was ever created, it was necessary to disassemble, move, and reassemble them for each performance. Harry’s compositions included large-scale theatrical works incorporating music, dance, stage-design and drama, with the musicians actively participating on stage and playing the physically demanding, mostly percussive instruments.
Harry’s life included many transient periods of traveling around the country as a hobo with tons of musical equipment in search of interested and sympathetic colleagues who would support his work and provide performance opportunities.
As performance opportunities were rare and difficult to realize, Harry Partch started recording his pieces in the late 1940’s. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, he released over 10 records on his own independent label, Gate 5. The show consists entirely of Harry’s own recordings.

KUSF 07.01.07 2-4 PM Spotlight Frank Zappa DJ Nikolai

FZ Freaking Out
Years before the Mothers of Invention, the young Frank Zappa created a musical legacy incorporating compositions, live performances, recordings, and “research tapes on sociological subjects” made in the desert towns of southern California from Lancaster to Hollywood.
A significant amount of this material was recorded at the famous Pal Studios in Cucamonga, where Zappa was involved with writing, engineering and producing several surf, doo-wop and novelty singles.
After he purchased the studio in 1964 and converted it into Studio Z, Zappa pursued endless recording, overdubbing and filmmaking projects, until the local authorities thought it necessary to intervene and throw him in jail.
The show also documents the formation of the original Mothers of Invention with live performances and demos from the ever-changing early lineups along with studio outtakes from the recording of their first album “Freak Out!” in 1966.
