KUSF 07.01.07 2-4 PM Spotlight Frank Zappa DJ Nikolai

FZ Freaking Out
Years before the Mothers of Invention, the young Frank Zappa created a musical legacy incorporating compositions, live performances, recordings, and “research tapes on sociological subjects” made in the desert towns of southern California from Lancaster to Hollywood.

A significant amount of this material was recorded at the famous Pal Studios in Cucamonga, where Zappa was involved with writing, engineering and producing several surf, doo-wop and novelty singles.

After he purchased the studio in 1964 and converted it into Studio Z, Zappa pursued endless recording, overdubbing and filmmaking projects, until the local authorities thought it necessary to intervene and throw him in jail.

The show also documents the formation of the original Mothers of Invention with live performances and demos from the ever-changing early lineups along with studio outtakes from the recording of their first album “Freak Out!” in 1966.
