KUSF In Exile 05.13.12 Rampage Radio 1st Three Hours DJ The Last Angry Manny

RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6,  1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a freshman at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.

I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!

KUSF In Exile 05.12.12 8-11 PM Fermata DJ Fari

A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration.
This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with artist and curators CHRIS DUNCAN and MAGGIE OTERO of LAND AND SEA Editions, about the release of their latest edition, a paper record, and the sound performance by Chris at Will Brown.

CHRIS DUNCAN is an interdisciplinary artist based in Oakland, CA. He employs the use of color, repetition, and reflections to explore ideas of perception and transcendence in paintings, drawings, and installations. Duncan has also been publishing books, zines, and releasing records for over a decade. Under the moniker Hot and Cold, he copublished a seven year long, 10-issue series of very hand-built art books including well-over 100 artists. Under the moniker Land and Sea, he works with his partner, Maria Otero, to release monographs and records. As THE SUN, Duncan creates sonic happenings that dismantle the idea of audience and performer, offering a space for anyone willing to participate. Chris received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and is a 2013 MFA candidate at Stanford University. He has performed, exhibited and is in the collection of Eli Ridgway Gallery, Berkeley Art Museum, SFMOMA, San Francisco Arts Commission, MOMA, Southern Exposure, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Halsey Mckay Gallery, and the Kemper Art Museum.

MAGGIE OTERO is an Oakland-based artists mostly known for her contribution as co-curator of the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery and an active supporter of the Bay area arts community. In addition Otero has worked with The Colima Project, in Colima, El Salvador, where she worked in documenting the community’s pre-civil war cooking techniques. Currently she is one half of Land and Sea.

LAND AND SEA is a fine art publishing house/record label/labor of love of Oakland based artists Maria Otero and Chris Duncan. Since its inception during the final breaths of 2009, LAND AND SEA has published 13 editions in the form of records, cds, monographs, and exhibition catalogs. Each edition of 100 has been affiliated with an event at art spaces throughout the Bay Area. The goal to not only provide accessible art-based books and records, but also to bring people together to have shared experiences and communicate by hosting events/performances. Performances and releases have included KALA, Baer Ridgway, Guerrero Gallery, Grace Cathedral, Macarthur B Arthur, Needles and Pens, and The Berkeley Art Museum. Their releases have been collected by SFMOMA and The Berkeley Art Museum. Land and Sea has worked with artists, Ryan Wallace, Colter Jacobsen, Tomo Yasuda, Trevor Montgomery, Danny Grody (Believer), Sean McFarland, Ryan Travis Christian, Kelly Ording, Mathew Zapruder and more. With plans on collaborating in 2012 with artists Sam Moyer, Eddie Martinez, Greg Stimac, Believer and Ruben Lorch-Miller. The New York Times gave a shout last year to Land and Sea in their article about small press/limited artist multiples titled A Quarterly Designed to Tweak All Senses, and you are quoted as saying “Downloading an MP3 is not beautiful; it’s an absent experience. Our approach is to make beautiful objects that also happen to have music in them.”

THE SOUND OF PAPER
WIDE AWAKE EDITIONS/LAND AND SEA 13
Edition of 12 stamped and numbered by hand; Cover, french paper bright white cover stock-laser engraved relief print; Gatefold interior, bright white masa paper-laser engraved relief print; Records, fabriano artistico 640 gram hot press-silkscreened and laser engraved relief print

Working within the language of the print but compelled to push away from traditional image making, Duncan created a double LP with hand-built gate-fold packaging. The records, however, are not 180 gram vinyl, but pieces of heavy-weight paper with embossed lines that serve as grooves for the record player needle to follow. The sonic results are a curious mix of white noise, sporadic beats, confusing discordance, and soft, warm harmony. Duncan discusses his print process and explore the sonic terrain of not only his records, but various other paper sources. Ripping, crumpling, amplifying, and looping, you created a lush, textured, and papery soundscape.

KUSF In Exile 05.12.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.

FAB MAB LIVE REDUX is a collection of live tape recordings that were recorded, mixed & produced by Terry Hammer circa 1979 through 1981 for various Bay Area radio stations. The weekly program was originally called FAB MAB LIVE.This is your chance to go back in time to the period when it all began and enjoy the great punk bands who started it all. These recordings were recorded sitting in the loud venues with headphones on and mixing on a cheap Peavey 12 channel mixing board direct to 2 Track Reel To Reel. They reflect the way the bands sounded at the time, drunk, stoned, out of tune and sometimes in tune. So,sit back, tune in,turn on,and experience the thrill of being at the great punk venues back in the day when it all began. And since these shows were mixed on headphones, they also sound better listening to them with headphones on turned up LOUD! Most shows are less than an hour,so, the hour will be filled with a delicious mixture of old school punk & reggae, with a taste of motown & 60's garage bands to round out the program. For a complete list of my live recordings,go to my website at http://www.angelfire.com/oh/liveperformances/livetapes.html

En Patufet fills the void of Catalan language music in the San Francisco Bay Area Radio. Each "Set de Set" showcases 7 (set) Catalan artists from across the genres, with heavy emphasis on new artists. The music of Catalonia comprises one of the oldest documented musical traditions in Europe, and has displayed a rich musical culture continuously for at least two thousand years. The Catalan language was forbidden during Franco's dictatorship, but it survived and continues to contribute to the great cultural fabric of Europe and the world.
