“Guitar Journeys” with Giacomo Fiore – September 6, 2010
Giacomo joined me Monday night to talk about his work with the guitar and play music from his upcoming concert program. Interview portions can be heard in between the musical selections listed below.
1. Fairwell to Stromness, by Peter Maxwell Davies (Giacomo Fiore, from the CD “Genteel”)
2. Selections from Hill Runes, by Peter Maxwell Davies (live)
3. “Flight of the Lovers through the Valley of Echoes,” from El Decameron Negro, by Leo Brouwer (live)
4. “The Leaning Lady,” from Scenes from Nek Chand, by Lou Harrison (David Tanenbaum)
5. “Passagaglia” and “Slow and Quiet,” from Nocturnal, by Benjamin Britten (live)
6. A Scot’s Tune, anonymous (Giacomo Fiore, from the CD “Genteel”)
The Anti-Warhorse Zone is in it's nineteenth year of thumbing down it's nose at the bizarre conventions of commercial "classical" radio. We're as committed as ever to the truths that music is not a commodity for consumption or a vehicle for technical perfection, and that even the best recordings don't reproduce music - only the sounds. We treasure risk-taking composers and performers who step up and take their own risks. In addition to our unruly broadcasts, Classics Without Walls works to counter the music-as-commodity blight by sponsoring small-scale concerts, mixed media presentations, and informal post-concert meals with the aim of helping draw musician and listeners closer into a community of participation.

Tonight's program began with an amazing track from Ricardo Villalobos, and then I presented a live mix of ham radio and scanner feeds for the balance of the show. Buried deep in the background was sound from Pete Namlook and Tetsu Inoue. The ham radio and scanner feeds came from Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Dortmund, Rome, and LaCrosse, Wisconsin. This focus on live radio mixing will likely continue in future programs.
