INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with writers, musicians, activists, and zine makers ERICK LYLE, SY WAGON, JULIAN DASH and two recipients of Julian Dash Factory Fellowship, CALVIN SMYTH and KATE BUENCONSEJO on their exhibition STREETOPIA curated by Erick Lyle, and artists Chris Johanson and Kal Spelletich at Luggage Store Gallery, San Francisco.

ERICK LYLE is a writer, musician, activist, and zine editor. Born in Orlando, FL, Erick grew up in South Florida, and has lived in Miami, Richmond, VA; Little Rock, AR; Eureka, CA; Chattanooga, TN; New Orleans, LA; and Berkeley, CA. He spent much of the 90s hopping freight trains around the country and living without electricity in abandoned buildings. For most of 15 years, now, though, he has resided mostly in San Francisco CA. Since 1991, Lyle has edited Scam, an influential zine that featured personal writing, politics, reports on protest events and interviews with activists and punk bands. He has been a frequent contributor to the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and a contributor to countless punk zines, including Nosedive, Rice Harvester, Mudflap, Tales of Blarg, Maximum Rock N Roll; and Error, edited by Sam McPheeters. He was a contributor to the literary magazine Raritan, an essay to City Lights anthology San Francisco: The Political Edge, and AK Press anthology Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority, edited by Josh MacPhee. He has also written and performed several pieces for NPR’s This American Life. From 1998 to 2003, Lyle worked at the Coalition on Homelessness San Francisco, an experience that informs much of his writing and political beliefs. Lyle is also a drummer and guitar player, playing in around 16 bands that have released 15 records and CD’s since 1991. Currently, Erick is the drummer of the ONION FLAVORED RINGS and the guitar player for BLACK RAINBOW. Lyle appears in Greta Snider‘s celebrated film Portland, a tale of three zinesters travelling from San Francisco to Portland who encounter all kinds of unexpected adventures. In 2001, Lyle made his own film, Nostalgia, a short about his trip to Cuba that stars Fidel Castro and the Baltimore Orioles! Lyle lives in New York.

SY WAGON is an artist and activist who has been living and working in San Francisco for 11 years. Sy creates communications and art that aim to fulfill the various needs of the liberated oddballs and the marginalized pan-sexual communities that find home and/or connection in San Francisco. Encouraging exchange of actual requests, offers, ideas, and goods toward growing a more free, self-sustaining alternative to dead end capitalist/consumer culture. She has self-published scores of her own and others’ zines, and for the past 3 years has published a free monthly community advertiser called BAITLINE!!! (http://blog.sfmoma.org/2009/11/baitline/). Sy has also collaborated with many Bay Area artists over the past years in painting, performance art, film, and music. She is in the band Alabaster Choad.

“In a recent interview on the Guardian's Pixel Vision blog, the artist Matt Keegan talks about the subversive social potential of gay calendars and magazines during past eras. You could say Baitline revives this potential. It's the anti-Craigslist. Hallelujah! Hand-drawn and stapled, this local community resource can help you find your next pervy playmate or like-minded roommate, or assist you in stoking an artistic project and finding a job.” —Johnny Ray Huston, SFBG June 2009

JULIAN DASH aka Jean Hackman, born in Japan now living in San Francisco is what some would call a Social Entrepreneur and Renaissance artist. He fuses art, clothing, music, education and culture seamlessly. He currently is gearing up towards fundraising for his new business: The Julian Dash Factory Fellowship which will serve as the education wing of his empire. Providing products through (dashetc) and services through Holy Stitch! The only other things to complete the picture would be a record label, restaurant, and a fully vertical of the grid factory. Self-taught and motivated he feels it is his duty to instill the same fire that was bestowed upon him into others.

The Luggage Store Gallery presents STREETOPIA, a large-scale group exhibition to take place in venues throughout downtown San Francisco (May 18 – June 23, 2012). Curated by writer, Erick Lyle, and artists, Chris Johanson and Kal Spelletich, Streetopia will bring neighborhood residents together with over 90 artists, performers, writers, filmmakers, activists, thinkers, and public policy makers in venues in the heart of the city, to address the show’s themes of Utopian aspiration for the city. The exhibition will be centered on an installation of a large collectively planned city to be built within the gallery in collaboration with numerous selected artists. Simultaneously an additional art and event space will be installed nearby at the Luggage Store Annex at the 509 Cultural Center on the other end of the neighborhood. One part show, and one part elaborate public experiment, the show spills out of these galleries into the surrounding neighborhoods with projects that include public murals, art on area billboards, installations in vacant storefronts, performances in the streets, and events at nearby community gardens.
