INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with writer BRADFORD NORDEEN who curates the DIRTY LOOKS NYC roaming queer film screening programs in New York, currently on a West Coast tour in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Portland, and his partner and collaborator, artist and designer DERIC CARNER, who is represented by Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco.

BRADFORD NORDEEN was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds an MA in Cinema Cultures from King’s College London and a BFA in Photography and Media from CalArts. Nordeen has organized screenings internationally and, in January 2011, launched DIRTY LOOKS NYC—a monthly platform for queer experimental film and video. A roaming series, Dirty Looks has been hosted by New York City venues PARTICIPANT INC, Judson Memorial Church, P.P.O.W, Silvershed, and White Columns. The West Coast tour includes dates at the California College of the Arts, with the Queer Cultural Center, ATA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Hammer Museum, among others. His writing has appeared in publications like Art in America, the Fanzine, indieWIRE, X-TRA, Lambda Literary, the L Magazine, Little Joe and Butt Magazines.

DERIC CARNER was born in Arlington, Virginia, an artist and publication designer interested in a spectral forms and speculative narratives. Carner has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions at Romer Young Gallery, EFA Project Space, New York, Centre Pompidou, Louis V. E.S.P., Artists Space, Queens Nails Projects, San Francisco Geisai Miami, Witte de With Rotterdam, CAC Vilnius, and Kunstverein Malkasten Duesseldorf. His work has been featured in publications by Revolver Books, Frankfurt; ZYZZYVA, SUM Magazine, Copenhagen; and is included in the KIOSK archive at the Kunstbibliothek Berlin. He received an MFA at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, 2005; with a concurrent MA from the University of Plymouth, UK, 2005, and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of California at Santa Cruz, 1998. Carner’s most recent project The Light that Failed will be exhibited at Romer Young Gallery, San Francisco in June.

DIRTY LOOKS NYC is a roaming series held on the last Wednesday of the month. Curated by Bradford Nordeen, Dirty Looks is a screening series designed to trace contemporary queer aesthetics through historical works, presenting quintessential GLBT film and video alongside up-and-coming artists and filmmakers. Filling a gap in the regular programming of Queer experimental work in the New York film community, Dirty Looks exhibits a lineage of queer tactics and visual styles for younger artists, casual viewers and seasoned avant-garde film-goers, alike. A salon of influences, Dirty Looks is an open platform for inquiry, discussion and debate.

“Deliver us from Daddy! Dirty Looks sets its sights on artist film and video that pierces dominant narratives, wanders with deviant eyes or captures the counter in salacious glares.”
