INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with curators GLEN HELFAND and CYDNEY M. PAYTON on their current exhibition Temporary Structures opened at SFAI’s Walter and McBean Galleries, and continues through December 15, 2012.
TEMPORARY STRUCTURES explores the exciting possibilities of impermanence. Featuring over a dozen acclaimed international and Bay Area artists, the exhibition includes works—many of them site-specific—concerned with architectural aspirations, follies, and momentary acts of cultural transformation. The projects address aesthetic, political, and social ideals, ranging from the rise of consumer culture to 19th-century French uprisings to the recent Occupy movement, and help bring new meaning and understanding to the past and present. Participating artists include: Pawel Althamer, Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt, David Gissen, Amy M. Ho, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Roy McMakin, Christian Nagler & Azin Seraj, Ben Peterson, Michael Robinson, Jonathan Runcio, Mungo Thomson, and Together We Can Defeat Capitalism, plus a climbing performance as part of Paul Kos’s installation. Temporary Structures includes a rich series of performances, artist talks, and film screenings, all FREE and open to the public.
GLEN HELFAND is an independent writer, critic, curator, and educator. His writing appears regularly in Artforum and at Artforum.com, and he’s contributed to the Huffington Post, San Francisco Bay Guardian, SFWeekly, ArtInfo.com, Salon.com, among many other periodicals and exhibition catalogs. He was the associate editor of the design magazine CMYK and a co-founder of the Bay Area arts website Stretcher.org. He’s a Senior Adjunct professor at California College of the Arts, where he teaches courses on contemporary art (including classes focusing on suburban aesthetics, commerce in art, and professional practice). He also teaches in the graduate and undergraduate art programs at Mills College, and at the San Francisco Art Institute where he organizes the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series. Helfand has curated exhibitions for the de Young Museum, San Francisco; the San Jose Museum of Art; the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena; Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco; Dust Gallery, Las Vegas; and the Mills College Art Museum, Oakland. He lives in San Francisco.

In 2008, MCADENVER, a commission that Payton oversaw working with British architect David Adjaye, received an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), UK. Recent publications include The Legend of Bud Shark and his Indelible Ink, Hardy Marks Publisher, DAP (2009), from an exhibition by the same title. A most recent project of note is The Thing Is To See: Photo-Souvenirs of Daniel Buren Works In Situ, 1968-1975, online at thethingistosee.com. Payton holds an MA in Curatorial Practice, Concentrating on the History and Theory of Architecture, California College of the Arts.
