KUSF In Exile 06.05.12 Noon-3 PM Carolyn

If anyone personifies the word 'maven' it's DJ Carolyn. Her impeccable
taste in punk, garage and rock has influenced Bay Area listeners for over
two decades. A listener passionately sent in, 'she has always been the
only DJ that matters. She finds music nobody else does, and it rocks!' Her
dedication to the local scene goes beyond spinning the latest indie disc
or old-school classic, to outright mentorship of fledgling talent. Catch
her weekly show... and you'll find out why, when it comes to Bay Area
rock, you've been served." -From SF Bay Guardian who awarded Carolyn as
2006's and 2008's Best DJ: Terrestrial Radio

KUSF In Exile 06.04.12 11-Midnight Room For Four DJ M Theo

Before there were recordings, music at home meant playing the piano; and before the inexpensive mass-produced piano, music at home meant gathering to play instruments together. With focus on the quartet, Room for four explores the music that was written not primarily to be performed for an audience, but to be played – for the players’ own enjoyment.

RAMPAGE RADIO is a 6 hour Heavy Metal radio show founded by Howie Klein, Ian Kallen & Ron Quintana which aired on KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco every weekend from March 6,  1982 until January 16, 2011 and continues to appear weekly on KUSF In Exile. The early years of Rampage featured the heaviest bands from the UK NWOBHM scene, Europe & the worldwide metal underground along with classic '70s bands and the roots of metal going back to the late '60s. Legendary artists such as Mercyful Fate, Yngwie Malmsteen & Metallica sent demo tapes to Rampage in the early '80s, receiving their first airplay on this show when no one else was willing to take a chance, and we are proud to have introduced listeners to every new worthy development in metal that has emerged over the last 30 years. Rampage Radio is now into it's 4th decade of weekly broadcasts and we continue to play non-commercial metal to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

Hello all! My name is Andrew Noerr, and I am a DJ here on KUSF in Exile. I am a freshman at the University of San Francisco, and I have always been interested in radio/TV broadcasting. Because of that, I chose to be a media studies major. Music and sports are my main interests, and music is what I am pursuing on the radio side.

I have a show on KUSF in Exile titled "Swamphell", and my name on the air is DJ Swamplord. The show airs from 1-2 a.m. late Saturday nights/Sunday mornings, and it actually is a very intense heavy metal show! I feel that it works well airing right before the famous Rampage Radio show that airs from 2-8 a.m. My focus is to shed light on the many great foreign bands on the metal scene, which also means that I will not be playing many bands from the United States. The genres that I play are 50% folk metal and 50% a combination of black and death metal. A fun thing I do for this show is that I am willing to play metal from all around the world, as metal is actually a very prevalent genre of music in many areas. One can realize this if they tune in to my show, so support me and give this a chance! Thanks for all the support!

KUSF In Exile 06.02.12 8-11 PM Fermata DJ Stevil

A fermata (also known as a hold, pause, colloquially a birdseye, or as a grand pause when placed on a note or a rest) is an element of musical notation indicating that the note should be sustained for longer than its note value would indicate. Exactly how much longer it is held is up to the discretion of the performer or conductor, but twice as long is not unusual. It is usually printed above, but occasionally below (upside down), the note that is to be held longer. Occasionally holds are also printed above rests or barlines, indicating a pause of indefinite duration.
This symbol appears as early as the 15th century, and is quite common in the works of Dufay and Josquin.

She has collaborated with many influential artists such as Neko Case, Jolie Holland, and Elliot Smith. Recent commissions include an original score composed and performed for ACT’s ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, London’s Barbican Hall Twisted Christmas program, and a contributor to the score of the film Crooked Beauty by filmmaker Ken Paul Rosenthal. INTERVIEW
Dj Margaret is joined in conversation with filmmakers ALFRED HERNANDEZ and KEN PAUL ROSENTHAL on their practice and their current film projects

ALFRED HERNANDEZ, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area has been making films and videos for over thirty years. His work uses the media as a way to self-discovery and personal transformation, and to foster deeper connection. He teaches film and video making to teens and adults through TILT, and the Academy of Art University. His filmmaking practice is a source of direct healing and community building while reflecting on the changing environment of the Bay Area. His films have shown at various festivals and screenings including the Chicago International Film Festival, the New York and San Francisco Museums of Modern Art, and on PBS stations.

DRAW REVELATIONS: A Memoir of Men Monsters and Mentors is a documentary that shows the transformative power of art and creativity in a large working-class Catholic family where physical abuse was a regular occurrence and sexual abuse had gone relatively unnoticed formany years. The video takes the viewer on a journey of self-realization, both personal and political, that speaks to the restorative power of creativity inherent in human beings wishing to overcome adversity and the importance of making the tools of creativity available to young people.

KEN PAUL ROSENTHAL is an independent filmmaker, teacher and activist. He is the recipient of a SAMSHA Voice Award for his media work in mental health advocacy, and a Kodak Award for Cinematography. Ken holds an MA in Creative & Interdisciplinary Arts, and an MFA in Cinema Production. He has taught film as a means of cultivating personal vision in workshops and universities in North America and abroad. Rosenthal’s recently completed social justice documentary, Crooked Beauty, explores a new healing culture and political model for living with madness as a tool of creativity, inspiration and hope. He continues to present Crooked Beauty screening lectures and workshops in peer support networks, hospitals, universities, art schools, symposia, and jails worldwide.

CROOKED BEAUTY is a poetic documentary that chronicles artist-activist Jacks McNamara’s transformative journey from childhood abuse to psych ward inpatient to pioneering mental health advocacy. It is an intimate portrait of her intense personal quest to live with courage and dignity, and a powerful critique of standard psychiatric treatments. Poignant testimonials connect the fissures and fault lines of human nature to the unstable topography and mercurial weather patterns of the San Francisco Bay Area. Crooked Beauty reshapes mental health stigmas through a new healing culture and political model for living with madness as a tool of creativity, inspiration and hope.

Crooked Beauty contributors: Angel Vasquez: Producer; Jacks Ashley McNamara: Voice, words, artwork; Monteith McCollum: Music, sound design & performance; Bonfire Madigan Shive: Cello composition and performance

KUSF In Exile 06.02.12 9-10 AM Poet As Radio

POET AS RADIO is a new, weekly program on KUSF In Exile, airing Saturdays from 9am to 10am at www.savekusf.org. Jack Spicer said that the poet is not a creator, but a conduit, getting messages from an undefinable source to form the poem. He thought of a poet as a radio, broadcasting words. We like to think of POET AS RADIO as an opportunity for writers to broadcast their words as well.

After doing various radio Specials the past year I was asked by KUSF in Exile in San Francisco to host a weekly program every Friday night at 7PM Pacific time. The first show aired on OCT 28 and featured UK Psychedelic Rock & Acid Folk 1968-1970. The programs focus will be highly eclectic with music played ranging the spectrum of sound and styles. I began Eurock as an FM radio program in California in 1971. Now after 40 years I have come full circle to begin again a new musical adventure. Tune in, Listen & Enjoy every Friday night!

FAB MAB LIVE REDUX is a collection of live tape recordings that were recorded, mixed & produced by Terry Hammer circa 1979 through 1981 for various Bay Area radio stations. The weekly program was originally called FAB MAB LIVE.This is your chance to go back in time to the period when it all began and enjoy the great punk bands who started it all. These recordings were recorded sitting in the loud venues with headphones on and mixing on a cheap Peavey 12 channel mixing board direct to 2 Track Reel To Reel. They reflect the way the bands sounded at the time, drunk, stoned, out of tune and sometimes in tune. So,sit back, tune in,turn on,and experience the thrill of being at the great punk venues back in the day when it all began. And since these shows were mixed on headphones, they also sound better listening to them with headphones on turned up LOUD! Most shows are less than an hour,so, the hour will be filled with a delicious mixture of old school punk & reggae, with a taste of motown & 60's garage bands to round out the program. For a complete list of my live recordings,go to my website at http://www.angelfire.com/oh/liveperformances/livetapes.html
