"Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something dusty." That's how Dennis The Menace describes his show featuring six decades of rock and roll by theme. Don't expect sets about trains, planes and automobile though. The connections are more about achieving the perfect segue, uncovering a deep musicological (or very trivial) factoid about the song or artist. All that and lots offer film tickets to indie films have made the show appointment radio on Friday nights!

Hello All,
As I’m sure you know by now my radio home of 9 years KUSF has been sold as part of a three station switcheroo. While we can talk about all the evil-doing involved offline, I’ve decided that the best thing for me to do is to get my shows back on the air a.s.a.p.!
So, I am happy to announce after just two weeks off the air, I am creating the “DTM Radio Network” that will put my shows on some of the best internet and terrestrial radio stations worldwide. I put internet first, because fact is the KUSF signal wasn’t exactly a powerhouse, and more and more of my listeners were listening via the internets!
My two radio shows: “The Menace’s Attic” (Six Decades of Rock and Roll by Theme for 9 years at 9 pm on Friday nights) and “Just Another Menace Sunday” Sundays 4-6 pm that has featured close to 300 long-form interviews with everyone from Mick Jones to Peter, Born & John, and their Musical Sandwiches (two of their songs as the bread and songs by others in-between) will be back this coming weekend on the first station in the network:
The new Radio Valencia in San Francisco broadcasting at 87.9 and streamed/podcasted at http://www.radiovalencia.fm
Radio Valencia has been kind enough to keep my shows on the air at exactly the same time with an EXPANDED two-hour Menace’s Attic starting at 8 pm on Fridays! (The first hour will be now be a playlist of some of my favorite music old and new – not necessarily by theme!) I will broadcast from both my comfy (and much more high-tech than KUSF!) home studio, and Radio Valencia’s funky studios in San Francisco’s Mission District.
The R.V. Studios also have an amazing space for full-on live sessions (I was limited to acoustic at KUSF) and I also plan to throw live shows there in the future to benefit both the station and my shows!
Please keep the music and the interview and promo pitches coming to my 360 28th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94121 address and CANCEL all music going to KUSF since it will not make it to me, or anyone formerly associated with the station!
Stay tuned for more stations in the network – I’ll let you know as soon as the contracts are signed. If you have any questions, please email me!

KUSF WFMU show - Feb 18th, Noon-3pm at Amoeba San Francisco In honor of the greatness that was (and hopefully will soon again be) San Francisco's KUSF 90.3FM, New Jersey's WFMU radio will turn over its airwaves to some of KUSF's finest DJs for a special live 3-hour remote radio broadcast from Amoeba Music San Francisco on February 18th. Former KUSF DJ and current WFMU DJ Billy Jam will engineer while music sets are spun by KUSF DJs Irwin, Carolyn, Stereo Steve, Jantine, and DJ Schmeejay who was in the middle of his show last month when the plug (literally) was pulled on the 90.3FM transmitter. Additionally these DJs, all active in the fight to Save KUSF, will talk about the latest in the ongoing battle to return the Bay Area institution that is KUSF to its rightful place on the FM dial. There will also be a KUSF information table set up by the Amoeba stage area where the live broadcast will take place. Amoeba Music is located at 1855 Haight St., San Francisco, CA 94117. The broadcast will take place on Friday, February 18th noon to 3pm local San Francisco time. It will be broadcast live back in Jersey City's WFMU studios on 91.1FM in the NY & NJ areas as well as streamed online at wfmu dot org

The students and community volunteers of KUSF-FM won a small victory on Tuesday in the fight to save the University of San Francisco’s (USF) radio station from an untimely, unannounced sale and change of format at 90.3. In a three to eight majority vote, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors resolved to oppose the sale of KUSF’s FCC license to classical station KDFC, whose license would in turn be sold to classic rock station KUFX. Initiated by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, the Board’s resolution is an important document in the station’s favor as it moves toward review by the FCC, the government agency that can ultimately stop the pending sale. Citing KUSF’s service to its community, its 6 p.m. till midnight nightly broadcasts, all day Saturday and Sunday cultural programming, and its award-winning music format, the resolution also commends KUSF for its support of the arts, foreign language, disabled, and senior communities. The board further resolved to urge Senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi to contact the FCC asap to express their opposition to the transfer of the license. Well done, SF Supes!
Last month, USF suddenly closed the KUSF broadcast facility without prior notice, locking out DJS and staff from the studios. Ever since January 18, students, community volunteers, and the listenership have been united in an online campaign to win back the airwaves. Facebook, blogs, letters and a petition all made the rounds; a rally was held at City Hall. This animated short lays down the implications of the sales and transfer of commercial versus non-commercial FCC licenses quite clearly. Sitting Music Director Irwin Swirnoff has largely played the role of tireless station spokesperson, while university officials who addressed public concerns immediately following the closure have maintained their position that the deal is done. However on Monday, the University of San Francisco Faculty Association got in on the act to save the station: The union organization representing over 300 teachers and librarians signed off on a request to USF and the FCC to cancel the sale proceedings.
One alternative proposed by staff and its supporters suggests the station be allowed to fund itself. However, at this stage of the process, it is not up to USF to withdraw the move to sell; rather it is up to the FCC to undo it. The case comes up for review with the federal commission later in the month.
In the meantime, the station is broadcasting online with a skeleton crew. Most of the students and community volunteers have resigned; they are the ones who need your continued support in the fight to Save KUSF. This weekend’s KUSF Rock ‘n’ Swap, a semi-annual vinyl, rarities collector’s meet that has been going strong for over 20 years will be held as usual on the USF campus Sunday morning. Doors open at 6 a.m. for earlybird swapppers. Shopping the swap for vinyl has traditionally been a way to show support to KUSF DJS and staff; money raised from the event contributes to the station’s operating costs. However as fate of the station’s broadcast future is yet to be determined, it’s hard to say what role this season’s Swap plays. Learn more about KUSF and donate, not only because you support college and community bandwidth, but because you love music and free-format programming. And if not for that, do it in memory of the Ramones: In the early ’80s, KUSF was the only station to play their music within SF city limits. Joey expressed his appreciation by posing for the above classic photo taken a by punk photographer, Bobby Castro, at the KUSF studios.

City Hall final meeting on Tuesday
For 33 years KUSF was an essential voice on the Bay Area FM airwaves. It featured unusually diverse, cutting edge music and a broad range of cultural programming not heard elsewhere on the dial. The university abruptly pulled the plug on the station under a $3.75 million deal that transfers KUSF's 90.3 FM frequency to classical music station KDFC, just purchased by a University of Southern California-controlled nonprofit. KDFC's old frequency, 102.1, is being taken over by rock station KUFX.
The move is part of a larger deal that still requires Federal Communications Commission approval. The organization saveKUSF is fighting to block the sale of the broadcasting rights to 90.3fm.
The university plans to make KUSF an online-only entity. KUSF enjoyed a mix of students and volunteers from the community. Community volunteers will not have a role with the on-line KUSF.

I am very disappointed in the University of San Francisco's recent decision to sell the broadcast license for 90.3 FM, where KUSF sat ("Hundreds protest decision to shut radio station KUSF," Jan. 20).
KUSF was a valuable resource to San Francisco. The station's locally produced programming exemplified the unique diversity and eclecticism that is San Francisco. KUSF broadcast in nine languages, giving a voice to those who have few other outlets through which they could be heard.
President Stephan A. Privett's blatant disregard for the people of San Francisco through this sale and the way it was handled is shameful. Although corporate deals involving commercial stations are common, stations in the public-radio frequency range should be treated differently. These stations are specifically set aside by the federal government for community service and noncommercial purposes. The transfer of these licenses should not happen without input from the community the station serves.
The University of San Francisco sought no community input in its decision to sell the frequency. The University of San Francisco and the community of San Francisco should come to a mutually beneficial solution to allow KUSF to remain intact on the broadcast dial at 90.3 FM. Carolyn Keddy, Oakland

Well, the radio station at 90.3 FM is gone, and the website will only take 15 listeners, so anyone who wants to listen to their favorite KUSF show these days is pretty much screwed, right?
Wrong -- sort of. Today, as KUSF supporters prepare for another demonstration at City Hall -- this one featuring a performance from local garage-rock hero/former KUSF DJ Ty Segall -- and as the Save KUSF campaign continues in full force with T-shirts, posters, letters of support from famous people, and more sadness, we bring you a small present: DJ David Bassin's show FreeFall, a sweet two-hour set of "future jazz, R &B, global grooves & abstract beats." Hearing it feels like a tonic, even if it isn't coming through the airwaves. Check it out after the jump.
"We've been away for a couple weeks due to all the craziness with KUSF," Bassin, says at the opening of his 10-year-old show, a decidedly understated way of putting it. "It's you and me together again."
Then Bassin launches into a two-hour journey through various rhythms -- electronic beats and Latin grooves included -- making for perfect morning music. Sadly, it can't help but remind us of everything music fans (and fans of free-form radio in general) have lost with the station's sale. Stream or download Bassin's latest show below, and show up to City Hall at 1 p.m. today for the rally, Segall performance, and signing of a resolution.

David Bassin hosts an eclectic two-hour mix of future jazz, R &B, global grooves & abstract beats tat has received international acclaim since it's debut in 2000. The transfer of these licenses should not to happen without input from the community which the station serves. The University of San Francisco sought no community input in its decision to sell the frequency.
The University of San Francisco and the community of San Francisco should come to a mutually beneficial solution in order to allow KUSF to remain intact on the broadcast dial at 90.3 fm.
Sincerely,
(your name)

Many of you know by now that KUSF was unjustly taken off the air in a complex deal in which America's fifth largest corporate radio conglomerate, Entercom, had part in some dealings along with the University of Southern California that has seen the purchase and takeover of low-dial airwaves and the contribution to the unfortunate trend of silencing independent voices and the mainstreaming/ homogenization of media.
As it stands now, the organization 'Save KUSF' plans to stop the sale of its broadcasting license before the FCC and intends to get back on the air. Our movement got off to a roaring start and now we must continue the momentum. The SF Board of Supervisors is now involved and has introduced a resolution co-sponsored by Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi, Eric Mar, and John Avalos. What can the board do you ask? It gives us political leverage in our fight so that once the resolution passes we can move on to bigger names (Pelosi, Boxer, etc.) and can be granted a meeting with USF in order to stop the deal.
This is where you come in. It is integral to our cause that the resolution pass this Tuesday, February 1st. Once again we rally at City Hall at 1 p.m., before the Supervisors meet AND VOTE on this resolution. They need to hear from constituents like you that it's unacceptable for a community/college-run station of 33 years with cultural programming in nine languages and ties to the vibrant underground and local music scene that will otherwise go unheard in a free broadcast format, to simply disappear.

Supporters of KUSF, the community radio station owned by the University of San Francisco that ceased broadcasting recently when it was abruptly sold, want to make sure the station’s extensive archives will be preserved.
Founded in 1963, the station’s archives contain a “massive number of CDs and vinyl,” according to Irwin Swirnoff, the former music director. “It has cultural value that is priceless in terms of diversity and obscurity,” he said, with deep collections in jazz, rock, punk, electronic music and other genres.
Archivists Meagan and Rick Prelinger of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco are advising Swirnoff and other KUSF supporters on preserving the collection. “The music library has to be kept intact as a physical memory of everything that KUSF has been, and as a starting point for future,” said Meagan Prelinger, who is a longtime fan of the station. “It’s like the sound track of my life has been turned off.”
The dimensions of the vast archive containing 34 years of Bay Area broadcasting history are difficult to determine precisely. Much of it sits in Phelan Hall on the University of San Francisco campus and will be moved to a yet-undetermined location in coming months.
Reached on Friday afternoon, university spokesman Gary McDonald said he didn’t know immediately how many items it contained. “We talk about it in terms of space,” he said. “It’s large.”
Swirnoff said the collection consists of an active CD library and vinyl library. Items like 78 rpm records are packed away in storage areas.
In the long term, the university plans to digitize the archive, according to McDonald, “so that it will be available to anyone working in KUSF.org,” the online-only version of the station that will replace KUSF.
McDonald said he didn’t know how much it would cost to convert the collection to digital or what would become of the original materials afterwards.
